“Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River” (Franklin-Gordon Wild Rivers National Park, Tasmania)
This iconic photograph was taken in 1979 by Tasmanian photographer Peter Dombrovskis and is considered to be one of the greatest nature photographs of all time. The photograph was first published in The Australian newspaper prior to the 1983 Australian Federal Election with the slogan “Could you vote for a party that would destroy this?”.
The area pictured would be submerged underwater in the planned Franklin Dam project. The movement that eventually led to the project’s cancellation became one of most significant environmental campaigns in Australian history. A legal battle between the federal government and Tasmanian state government followed, resulting in a landmark High Court ruling at 10.40 am on July 1, 1983, where the High Court of Australia declared The Franklin dam illegal. During the campaign against the dam, both the Franklin and Gordon rivers were World Heritage listed.
